One of the most diverse and fun areas to collect in U.S. revenues is the various plate errors of the first, second, and third issues. There are a myriad of double and triple transfers, scratched and cracked plates, doubled frame lines, and a host of others. Some of these are listed in Scott, but many are not. More importantly, previously unseen (or unnoticed) varieties are being discovered every day.
You can drive yourself to blindness by examining every facet of every stamp. Frequently, when looking at Scott, since many of the listed varieties are listed but not pictured, you wind up asking yourself "Ok, so exactly WHERE should I be looking on the stamp for this variety??"
These pages are an attempt to document as many of the varieties as I can, and more importantly, show real-world examples of them, not just penciled diagrams. Some of these stamps are from my personal collection, whereas others have been submitted by readers of this website. If you have any examples of varieties not shown here, or a better-quality example, and are willing to contribute a high-resolution scan of the stamp, it would be greatly appreciated. The following are frequently-used terms when discussing plate varieties.
Double transfer. A stamp with doubling of a part of the intended design. The extra lines come from a second application of the transfer roll, but with it not positioned perfectly with the existing entry. Some of the terms below are versions of a double transfer.
Triple transfer. A double transfer stamp with additional doubling from a second (but different) misplaced setting of the transfer roll. Example of RT16c triple transfer follows. See upper left "1" and first "P" of Proprietary.

Twisted transfer. This is the term we use after a plate has been reentered (all positions), and the plate was not in perfect alignment with the transfer roll (i.e., twisted a degree or two out of true). Many revenue plates show this phenomenon when they were reentered. The result is that the top and bottom row stamps on the plate have East-West thickening of the design at their edges, sometimes quite strong. The interior rows of stamps have this to a much lesser degree.
Short transfer. A stamp with part of the design missing, usually due to erasure.
Foreign entry. A stamp with extra lines that come from a different stamp, such as position 68 of the 2-cent Express having parts of the 1-cent design. This variety can arise by having two or more different stamp reliefs on one transfer roll, and over-rocking (i.e., the 2-cent Certificate "eyebrows" or the second issue 70c design at the top of the 60c stamp). It can also happen by using the wrong transfer roll.
