Last updated May 15, 2020 1st Issues Revenue Part Perforates... No, the OTHER Direction!

The part-perforated 1st issue revenue stamps (the "b" suffixes in the Scott Catalogue) are found primarily with the imperforate sides at the top and bottom of the stamps (imperforate horizontally). Some of the stamps, however, are also found with the imperforate sides at the left and right sides (imperforate vertically). The Scott Specialized Catalogue designates those that are found in both orientations with an asterisk to the right of the catalogue value.

In all cases, part perfs with imperforate edges at the left and right sides are more scarce than those with imperf edges at top and bottom... some incredibly so, to the point that they warrant (in my opinion) completely different valuation. Some are truly rare.

Additionally, the Scott Catalogue is not up to date with respect to which types are found imperforate vertically.

This page is an attempt to aggregate images from a variety of sources (major auction houses, online auction venues, revenue stamp dealer websites, message boards, collector sites and postings, etc.) of vertically imperforate part perfs, both multiples and singles, in an attempt to substantiate and quantify both the existence of, and relative scarcity of, these alternate-orientation part perforate stamps.

I make no claims as to whether examples below are genuine or not. In fact, I know some of them are most definitely NOT genuine... however the images make for good discussion/comparison fodder. Some of the images are very low resolution, and some cannot be used to accurately gauge color. The images should be considered in the aggregate.

Another possibility for some of these part perfs is that they may not actually be deliberate part perfs at all, but rather perforation errors, i.e., not intended for distribution. This is definitely the case for some (if not all) of the R69b multiples shown below, as the color and impression are indicative of late-state printings, and thus fall well outside of the period that part perfs would have been intentionally produced.
